U.S. Senate candidate Sharron Angle does not believe the color black is evil or evokes the devil, says her campaign spokeswoman, Ciara Matthews.
In a brief interview today, Matthews repeated the assertion that Angle has no recollection of opposing black jerseys for the Tonopah High School football team in 1992 because the color was “evil,” as a rural Nevada columnist reported recently. But she added that an investigation by the campaign hasn’t produced other witnesses to Angle’s opposition to the jerseys, either.
Angle was running for Nye County School Board at the time, and her opposition allegedly prevented the Tonopah team’s then-coach from allowing his players to don black jerseys to mark a painful defeat the hands of a rival school.
The Angle campaign responded to the controversy first by trying to change the subject, but not denying the claim. Angle later said she had “no recollection” of opposing black jerseys. And her campaign later said the incident “wasn’t even true.”
