Sharron Angle‘s media campaign for U.S. Senate is nothing if not nostalgic. Could her campaign, for example, really not have known it was cribbing a recent tagline — “Help is on the way” — from John Kerry‘s unsuccessful bid against George W. Bush in 2004? She references Ronald Reagan endlessly on the campaign trail, especially when discussing Reagan’s unfulfilled promise to erase the Departments of Education and Energy from the federal bureaucracy. (Reagan failed to do either, and then created a new one, Veterans Affairs.)
Angle’s most recent ad borrows again, directly quoting Reagan’s famous remark that government is the problem. And it’s title — “Right Here Right Now” — which is also the title of a Jesus Jones song about historic change brought about, in part, by Reagan’s policies. Oh, and she’s wearing red. Whatever else may be said of Angle, it cannot be said she’s subtle.
A final note about this ad: Angle is partially right when she says there’s fear in the country. But might it not be that the fear stems in part from Angle’s promise to dismantle or truncate some of the very key functions of government (Social Security, unemployment benefits, constituent service) at the very time they are most needed? Does it not seem logical to her that a person who is currently jobless and unable to afford his mortgage is more concerned in the present about survival than he is about long-term deficits and debt? And is she not expanding that fear instead of mollifying it?

It should also be noted that Angle often says that if elected she will “build a coalition of the willing” in order to get her policies enacted.
“Coalition of the willing” can either be looked at as a Clinton term (which, again, why is she quoting Democrats?) or as a G.W. Bush term for the failed attempt to get other nations seriously behind the invasion of Iraq.
Either way it’s just another example of how Angle as a candidate is nothing more than a string of phrases that sound familiar. No depth behind them, no thought put into them.
All I see is Sharron Angle trying to walk back everything she said before.
Nice try. I’m not fooled.
Don’t get me wrong, Steve. People say things and make a mistake. But not a whole slew of them!
For six weeks or so up til now, she said things left and right that were outright crazy. Now, she is changing, imploring people that what I said before is not the case, here, let me take this stuff I said on the etch-a-sketch, turn it upside down, shake, THERE!, all gone, now I get to start over again and tell you anything you want to hear.
It don’t work like that. She said what she said before and she meant it. This crap trying to change an image just shows more flip flopping, pandering to the uninformed to get their votes and basically just playing politics only, not being truthful about issues.
I just hope Nevadans are not fooled by this incredibly nonsensical lady.
By the way, I read a blog comment on another sight that was in response to Sharron Angle receiving a “calling” from God.
This person asked the logical question that if she received a “calling” from God, how come she skipped over the job as Pope, deciding to choose Nevada Senator instead?
“Right Here, Right Now”
I actually, I saw that and had the looping sample from the Fatboy Slim song in my head.
Reading through all of Angle’s published remarks then it is pretty clear
her stance against booze, gambling and prostitution adds up to her possibly wanting to “close down” Las Vegas and Reno? And she came out against Social Security too! How can she attract ANY votes at all with these attitudes???
Can anyone find a quote where Sharron Angle says she’s against booze, gambling and/or prostitution?
She’s a limited government person, so wouldn’t she be against regulation of the above vices, and in favor or individual liberty?
Why, yes, Kerry, I can find a quote from Sharron Angle in which she says she’s against booze. It’s here, in a reprint from a 2005 interview in a now-defunct magazine called Liberty Watch. Please follow the link and enjoy.
