Here’s the latest ad from Brian Sandoval‘s gubernatorial campaign. Looks like it’s no more Mr. Nice Guy!
The ad takes on Gov. Jim Gibbons and Clark County Commission Chairman Rory Reid (nice association!) for allegedly lying about Sandoval. While the ad says Sandoval never sued the Legislature to raise taxes (although he clearly did) the screen flashes a quote from my colleague Jon Ralston, which says Sandoval never encouraged the Legislature to raise taxes (which he clearly didn’t). So, the ad about not telling the truth is only half-true.
When it comes to Gibbons, the ad hits him for saying he hasn’t raised taxes when he actually did, by $300 million. And Gibbons has been criticized for allowing a room tax increase to go into effect (albeit without his signature), for raising fees in the most recent special session and — by Sandoval back in March — for a highway construction sales tax increase. The ad doesn’t mention Gibbons’s vetoes of tax bills in 2009, but hey, they only had 30 seconds, right? And tossing in Gibbons appeal of his property taxes in Elko County (wherein the governor was found not to have committed wrongdoing) is something everybody should have seen coming.
Tying Reid to Gibbons is a wicked strategy, although it may prove to be wickedly effective if people ignore the fact that it’s not Reid who’s being slammed in the ad as much as his “Washington friends” who are running the ads against Sandoval. If nothing else, it shows Sandoval is ready to fight and unafraid to throw some elbows. Getting called a Nazi sympathizer will probably do that to a guy.
